Ancillary Control Purpose To test your ability to locate and/or adjust controls without loosig full control of the vehicle. Types of errors you can make CDE - NCDE It is a critical driving error (CDE) and therefore the test will be terminated ahead of time if you for example: Fail to start the engine due to incorrect gear selection (automatic only)
Fail to start the engine due to an electronic disabling device
Fail to wear a seat belt where legally required
Use a hand held phone during driving
Attempt to start the engine even though the engine is already running
You get allocated one non critical driving error (NCDE) if you for example:
Incorrect or inappropriate use of any control, e.g. start the wipers instead of turning on the light, using the horn inappropriately and so on.
TIP
Exercise to operate all your controls whilst driving. You should be able to turn on the radio, demister, air conditioner or whatever control withou actually having to look at it and of course without loosing control of the car. It is good practice to exercise first on the standing vehicle, then at slow speed.
