Braking

Purpose

To test your ability to steer a steady course in an approved manner.

Types of errors you canmake

CDE - NCDE

It is a critical driving error (CDE) and therefore the test will be terminated ahead of time if you for example

Unnecessarily brake abruptly
Roll on a grade more than 30cm or comprise safety of others
Skid due to heavy braking and do not correct quickly
Ride the brake with the left foot
Operate the hand brake causing a loss of vehicle control
Leave the hand brake on and this effects the performance of the vehicle

You get allocated one non critical driving error (NCDE) if you for example

Use the brakes excessively or in an erratic manner
Fail to secure the vehicle when stationary
Use the pedal inappropriately (e.g. just with your toes)
Roll on a grade less than 30cm and without compromising the safety of others
Apply the foot brake heavily during a turn
Leave the hand brake on without affecting the performance of the vehicle

TIP

If you really need to slam it on, don't do it! Start by just brushing the brakes and then increase the pressure continuously.  Never lock your wheels.  Slamming your foot on the brakes will make your nose dive, your rear instable and your wheels lock.  Never lock your wheels!
